You are probably getting sick of posts about the book of James. But I'm not and so you're stuck. This week Beth Moore had us do an interesting exercise that has to do with the wisdom from above vs. the wisdom from below that James 3 elaborates upon.
First, think of two people that you know who are wise and understanding. (wise=they know what to do, understanding=they know why they should do it) Ok, you have your two people. Now think, are any of these people harsh. I was shocked to realize that she was right. The two people that I had picked were not harsh. What does this mean?
James 3:13--"Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom." The HCSB version says it this way--"He should show his works by good conduct with wisdom's gentleness."
Yikes, as a mom I am regularly herding wild little boys away from open windows and flames and patching up stick related injuries and firmly ushering these same little boys into bed or off to school just a little bit late...again. You will probably be shocked and horrified to find out that I am not always engaged in these activities with "Wisdom's Gentleness" in my voice and facial expressions. But luckily James also offers an once of hope along with his 5 metric tons of conviction.
James 1:5--"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him."
And also a deeper look at what this mysterious wisdom looks like.
James 3:17-18--"But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peace-makers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness."
Wow! I think I'm just going to hop back over to chapter one and start with the whole asking for wisdom bit, because this Mom of three has a long long ways to go. Thank you Lord that you not only understand where we should be going, but the place of weakness that we are coming from as well.
